Overview
Exhibiting with Robert Filliou
I knew some of his quotations at the Beaux-Arts, before discovering his pieces. He was seen as a lighthouse artist (in the sense that he shone a light on an area that was in the shadows), a bit like one of the untouchables: an extraordinary and very touching state of mind. When I saw his work again recently, a feeling of immediate fraternity came over me: how good it is to make new friends, even when they're dead!
You might think that he and I are on opposite shores, since, to put it quickly, he is in his installations and I am in the pictorial (one of the phrases Jean Fournier said to me, and it was more than encouraging for a young painter in the studio, in front of paintings: painting remains a great path). We are on the banks of the same river, the one that Lautreamont talks about: Poetry is not a storm, any more than it is a cyclone. It is a majestic and fertile river.
The wall with Bernard Marcadé
I find it exciting to work with Bernard. He regularly visited the studio where I studied at the Beaux- Arts, and we met up again two decades later to resume the conversation with this 'core sample' rendered as a mural.
When you're with Bernard, you're also in this big gap between Duchamp and Leroy, which is no mean feat...
