We are pleased to announce that “Rascasse et citrons”is now part of the Musée d’Orsay collections, the first work by Jeanne Selmersheim-Desgrange to join the institution.
"Rascasse et citrons is a typical work by Jeanne Selmersheim from the 1910s. The lemon branch in a vase, the vegetables and the fish arranged on a table evoke cooking, the maritime world, and the Mediterranean art of living, enlivened by the venomous spines of the red scorpionfish. The thick, mosaic-like brushwork, the contrasts between complementary colours, and the dominant use of violet correspond to the contemporary works of Signac, such as The Entrance to the Port of Marseille (1911, Musée d’Orsay). The technique is adapted to her favoured subject, still very little explored by the Neo-Impressionists: still life."
Excerpt from an article by Jean-Rémi Touzet, curator for 19th-century collections at the Musée d'Orsay, published on the occasion of the announcement that the work had been added to the museum's collections.
